While Japan is widely known as a safe country, taking a highway night bus might still make some people feel a bit anxious. For those with these concerns, I'd like to share my firsthand experience traveling by night bus all the way from Shinjuku in Tokyo to Kurashiki, Okayama!

This report covers my experience on WILLER EXPRESS's "PRIME" seat, along with my top recommendation for a morning cafe and a must-visit souvenir spot in Kurashiki.

How to Get to Kurashiki from Tokyo

Comparison of Transportation Options from Tokyo to Kurashiki.

Transportation Estimated Price Estimated Travel Time
Flight Approx. 10,000 to 30,000 JPY Approx. 3h 40m or more
Bullet Train Approx. 17,000 JPY Approx. 3.5 to 4 hours
Overnight Bus Approx. 5,000 to 10,000 JPY Approx. 11 hours

*Flight fare only. Transportation costs from the airport are not included.
*Prices are estimates and vary depending on the travel season, such as peak and off-peak periods. (Information as of May 2026)

When comparing the travel time of these transportations, although the actual flight time is only about 1 hour and 15 minutes, the travel time will add up when including airport transit and boarding. In the end, it ends up being about the same as or slightly longer than the bullet train. Flights operate roughly once every two hours. From Okayama Momotaro Airport, it takes about 35 minutes by limousine bus to reach Kurashiki Station.
For the bullet train route, you take the Shinkansen to Okayama Station and transfer to a local train line, which takes about 15 minutes to reach Kurashiki.

Overnight buses are the best way to save money on transportation. During sale periods on WILLER TRAVEL, tickets can drop to just 3,000 to 4,000 JPY! The biggest advantage of saving on transit is that you can put that extra budget toward cafe-hopping, better accommodations, or delicious local food.
