Spot information
Miyama's thatched village (Kayabuki no Sato)
Miyama Kayabuki no Sato is a beautiful village lined with thatched-roof houses. It is a remote, rural area in the mountains 30 kilometers north of central Kyoto. The area is famous for its traditional, thatched roof (kayabuki) farmhouses of which over 200 can be seen dotting the countryside.
Miyama Village is a place where more than 1 meter of snow accumulates every winter. Enjoy the pristine winter scenery of Japan with this special light-up event.
Kifune Shrine
Kifune Shrine enshrines the god of water, the source of life, and is the head shrine of 2,000 water gods across the country. The shrine was founded very anciently, and although its origins are unknown, there are records showing that the main building was rebuilt about 1,300 years ago, making it one of the oldest shrines in Japan.
In winter, you can see the snowy scenery. The grounds are covered in pure white snow, and the lanterns lining the stone steps give off a soft glow, creating a mystical sight.
