To The Journey Along the Omi Road with Omi Railway

The Omi Railway, running through eastern Shiga Prefecture, is a beloved local line serving the community, spanning 59.5 km with 33 stations. The serene rural landscape of the Koto Plain unfolds outside the window, along with castle towns retaining old merchant houses. From the moment you pass through the ticket gate, Omi's rich nature and historical romance welcome the traveler.
Along the line are tourist spots including the National Treasure Hikone Castle, Hachimanbori known as a period drama filming location, and La Collina popular with women, as well as famous shrines and temples like Taga Taisha, the deity of longevity known as O-Taga-san, and Taro-bo Shrine, the deity of victory.
Extending your trip from Gokasho Station to the Omi Merchant Residences, the white-walled, latticed-townscape left by wealthy merchants conveys the spirit of the Omi Merchants, renowned for frugality and advanced management. In autumn, the Koto Sanzan (Kongorin-ji, Saimyo-ji, Hyakusai-ji) captivate visitors with corridor-like vistas of brilliant autumn leaves like brocade paintings. The Omi Road offers scenery for each season.
Numerous sake breweries dot the Omi Railway line, where sake brewing utilizes high-quality groundwater and underground water sourced from the mountains surrounding Lake Biwa and Omi rice. Visiting these breweries, each with its own history and character, by train is another charm of traveling on the Omi Railway.
Now, how about touring Shiga, the Lake Country condensed with rich nature, history, and fermented food culture, swaying along on a nostalgic local line? We sincerely await your visit.

PATTISERIE CAFÉ KATASHIMA

Since its founding in 1970, patisserie cafe Katashima has sunk its roots into the region, and works to spread the appeal of food, including that of Western confectionery.

Currently, with the addition of our sister site Restaurant La Riviere, we operate five restaurants in the Kitakinki area. In recent years, we have focused on producing food that makes use of the excellent local ingredients and resources.

"Katagi Kokaen" Providing Koga's Famous "Asamiya Tea"

Asamiya Tea

Koka City, spreading across southern Shiga Prefecture, is known as the home of the Koga Ninja, where you can touch the romance of ancient history through ninja mansion tours and ninja experiences. It is also famous as the production area of Shigaraki-yaki, one of Japan's Six Ancient Kilns. In the Shigaraki area, scattered pottery studios offer the unique pleasure of encountering the distinctive skills of local artists.
'Katagi Kokaen,' cultivating tea in Koga City where nature and tradition thrive, prides itself on delivering safe and secure tea through organic farming without chemical fertilizers or pesticides. Blessed with fertile soil and pure water, their tea gardens produce a diverse lineup of Asamiya teas: sencha with umami and rich depth, matcha characterized by a vivid green color and mild sweetness, aromatic hojicha (roasted tea), and more.
In the second dish of this course, "Omi Province, Omi ~Biwako Blue~," please enjoy sweets generously using Asamiya tea from Katagi Kokaen, nurtured by Koga's abundant nature and history.
