About Shirakawago
Located in a snowy region of central Japan, Shirakawago is nestled in the Shogawa River basin of northwestern Gifu. Surrounded by rugged mountains near the borders of Toyama and Ishikawa, this village was once a "hidden region" with limited outside contact.
Since its registration as a UNESCO World Heritage site in 1995, it has become a popular destination for many travelers, yet it remains a "living cultural heritage" where people continue to go about their daily lives.
The greatest charm of Shirakawago is how the Gassho-zukuri village, existing in harmony with harsh nature, reveals a completely different face with each passing season.
In spring, melting snow and budding greenery bring new life. Summer highlights the contrast between green fields and thatched roofs, while autumn paints the village in golden and fiery hues. Finally, winter transforms Shirakawa-go into a mystical, snowy fairy tale.
